Chinese Black Basalt Column Lights

Because stone is a natural for the garden. These lights look great alone, in groupings, or placed throughout a landscape. Stately and handsome, these sculptural, hand-split black basalt pillars elicit quiet admiration. Whether you want a clean-lined modern look, a natural effect, or an impression that’s entirely your own, these lights are a great choice to unify the look, light, and feel of your landscape. Effective, useful light glows from beneath the copper sconce, illuminating your pathway, garden, or entry and highlighting the subtleties of the dramatic basalt column.

Chinese Black Basalt: Each column is a unique, four-sided stone post from China that shows the soft edges and hewn marks of hand-splitting. The stone is a deep ash-grey-black, and the texture is fine-grained and much “softer” to the touch than granite. These columns have a subtle elegance and style that’s contemporary yet timeless, enhancing any landscape.

Our copper sconce and copper detailing complement this deep grey stone. The detailing forms a stem-like pattern that contains and conceals the wire leading up to our hand-hammered copper sconce. Our Washington artisans inset the copper in the column by hand. This takes an eye for sculpture and design, creating a unique piece with a personal touch.

Copper: Our lamp sconces are locally made of hand-hammered, “weighty” copper, which can be left to weather naturally or given a patina finish to look old sooner with a soft-green, verdigris color.

Sizes: We create these columns in sizes from 38–42 inches high with a width of about 5 inches.

Illumination: 12 volt lamping using an 18-watt or lower wedge-based incandescent light. This design features a functional, effective, warm-toned light, which illuminates a 225 ° sector 12 feet or more in diameter around the post.

Night-Sky-Friendly: All our lights are night-sky-friendly. This means that the light shines where you need it: toward the ground on paths, entries, and stairs, but not into your eyes, or your neighbor’s, and not into the sky to waste electricity and obscure the stars. All of our lights use UL-approved electrical components, and they all meet or exceed the code requirements that many cities have adopted to limit outdoor light pollution.

Mounting: This is hard rock, so we have mounted it for you! It comes affixed to a steel bracket and is ready to set in concrete.
